Defending state champions headed back to state

The Burlington and Catholic Central High School girls’ volleyball teams are headed back to state.

BHS beat Westosha Central 25-17, 25-17, 25-10 for the WIAA Division 1 Elkhorn sectional title Saturday night. The Demons trailed in each of the first two games, but stayed solid behind the play of seniors Ciara Capezio, Morganne Longoria and Kaysie Shebeneck, as well as solid play from the rest of the team.

Capezio finished with a match-high 19 kills, while Shebeneck had 37 assists and Longoria 10 digs.

Catholic Central, meanwhile, swept Sheboygan Area Lutheran 25-17, 25-20, 25-14.

Burlington will open play at the WIAA state meet Thursday at 7:30 p.m. against De Pere, while CCHS will play Friday at 10 a.m. against Luck.

In other action Saturday afternoon, the Burlington co-op swim team finished second at the Southern Lakes Conference meet at Platteville, and Catholic Central fell in overtime to Randolph in a WIAA Division 7 Level 2 playoff game, 36-35.
