The Catholic Central High School girls basketball team may have lost their Metro Classic Conference opener Tuesday night 49-32 to Shoreland Lutheran, but there were plenty of signs of improvement.

“We played much better tonight,” said head coach Jeff Behrens. “I think we showed some progress.

“We played well on defense, but late in the game when we had to come out of our zone, they took advantage of that,” he added. “We still turned the ball over too many times and that, of course, limits our field goal attempts.”

Shoreland took at 24-12 lead into the locker room at the half, though CCHS cut the lead to 10 by the end of the third quarter.

Lutheran pushed the lead back to 14 early in the fourth quarter, and the Lady ’Toppers were forced to foul.

Sophie Foote was the lone Lady ’Topper in double figures, finishing with 11 points. Kelsey Robers had nine rebounds to go with her eight points.

Ali Wiemer, who had seven points before fouling out against Shoreland, was one of the few bright spots for CCHS in a 61-28 loss at Lake Country Lutheran.

Wiemer finished with 12 points and tied for team honors in rebounding with five – the same as Robers and Elli Czerwinski.

Lake Country Lutheran was led by Mary Hirt, who had a game-high 26 points, including a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.

“Hirt is the real deal,” Behrens said. “She also draws a lot of fouls and obviously hits them as well.

“We’re young and it showed.”
