AVIS M. SCHAAL

Easter Lily      Avis M. (Martin) Schaal, 90, Waterford, died March 30, 2015, at Waterford Senior Living. She was born on Nov. 22, 1924 to the late Walter and Olive (Stubbs) Martin.

Her family moved from Waukesha to Burlington where she attended school, graduating from Burlington High School in 1942. She then attended Racine-Kenosha Teachers College graduating in 1944, and graduated from UW-Whitewater in 1960. She taught in Caldwell and the Waterford School District for a total of 36 years.

She married Kenneth E. Schaal on May 31, 1946. They operated a dairy farm near Waterford for many years. He preceded her in death on June 3, 1987.

She was a member of Norway Evangelical Lutheran Church, Martha Clausen Bible Guild, Wisconsin Retired Educators Association, National Retired Educators Association, Walworth County Retired Educators Association, and the Red Hats Society.

Survivors include her children, Sue (Tom) Johnson, Waterford; Carol (Robert) Michels, Manitowoc; K. Ronald (Kim), Goode, Va.; Patricia Schaefer, Waterford; grandchildren, Julie (Gregg) Bartel; Kristin (Doug) Menzia; Steven Rowntree; Jennifer (Christopher) Novak; Adam (Sheryl) Schaefer; Ryan (Amy) Schaal; Keith (Cristal) Schaefer; and Stacy (Christopher) Middleton; great-grandchildren, Jayna, Carly, Brynn, and Shaye Bartel; Logan, Ethan, and Tanner Schaefer; Xander and Tim Novak; Eva and Anna Menzia; Meyer and Mallory Schaal; Rylee Schaefer; and Breyden and Mya Middleton; two nephews and one niece.

She was further preceded in death by her brother, Howard Martin; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

A visitation is Saturday, April 4, from 9-10:45 a.m., at Norway Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6321 Heg Park Road, Wind Lake, with services starting at 11 a.m. Burial will take place in Burlington Cemetery at 2 p.m., on April 4. Meet at the cemetery. Mealy Funeral Home, Waterford, is serving the family.

In lieu of floral expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials be made to Lutherdale Bible Camp, Norway Lutheran Church, or Norway Food Bank Helping Hands.
