NORMAN W. SCHERRER

Easter Lily      Norman William Scherrer, 82, died Dec. 27, 2014, at Burlington Aurora Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family during his final hours and had the opportunity to share his love and final words of wisdom to all.

He was born Jan. 3, 1932, in Burlington to the late Elmer J. and Agnes (Elverman), the third of 12 children. He grew up in New Munster, attending St. Alphonsus Grade School. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1949 and briefly attended UW-Milwaukee before returning to Burlington to assist his father and brother in the operations of Scherrer Construction.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 25th Division during the Korean War from 1952-1954.

He returned to Burlington and on Oct. 1, 1955 married Constance Joy Whims. They resided in Burlington for their entire marriage in the family home that Norm had built.

He transitioned from Scherrer Construction to begin Scherrer-Strohm, Inc. in 1972. He was an alderman and served on St. Mary’s Parish Finance Committee and the Burlington Police and Fire Commission. He was a Burlington Lions Club member with perfect attendance from 1957-2014 and held every office during those years. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award during his tenure which is the highest honor bestowed by the Lions Club. He enjoyed golf, politics, reading, following his favorite team the Green Bay Packers, and continually testing the Scrabble skills of his family. He was truly a proud American patriot who served his country, church, community and family.

Survivors include his wife; children, Susan (Gary) Harper, Burlington, Thomas (Mary) Scherrer, New Berlin, Jane (Mike Atlas) Scherrer, Madison; granddaughters, Ashley England, Janine Scherrer, Kelly Scherrer, Caitlyn Scherrer; grandsons, Marcus Scherrer and Mitchell Scherrer; siblings, Joan (Rich) Strohm, Barbara Scherrer, Marlene Scherrer, Edward Scherrer, Carolyn (James) Bauman, Kathryn Bryant, Patrick (Elena) Scherrer; sister-in-law, Barbara (the late Elmer) Scherrer; brothers-in-law, Gordon (Linda) Marshall, James (the late Joan) Marshall, Patrick (Sue) Marshall; nieces; nephews; other relatives; friends; and his constant feline companion Gracie.

He was further preceded in death by his son, Christopher; siblings, Elmer, Thomas, and Joseph, and Charlotte.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Jan. 2, at noon at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Burlington. Relatives and friends may meet with the family beforehand at the Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home, 625 Browns Lake Drive, Burlington, from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Mary’s Parish, St. Mary’s Grade School, Catholic Central High School, and the Catholic Central Athletic Association are suggested.
