SAMUEL H. LIPTON


Samuel H. Lipton, 91, Las Vegas, Nev., died peacefully on Jan. 15, 2013, due to a stroke after suffering a broken hip. He had been a resident in an assisted living facility because of Alzheimer’s Disease.

He was born Feb. 6, 1921, to the late Isaac and Ida Lipton, in Burlington,. In 1938 he graduated as valedictorian of his Burlington High School class, and continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he received scholastic honors including Phi Beta Kappa.

He graduated in June 1942 with a BS in Chemistry, and then entered graduate school.

On Feb. 4, 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After completing additional schooling he was commissioned and assigned to Air Corps Intelligence. In May of 1944 he was in England with the 66th Bomb Squadron, 44th Bomb Sp. Upon discharge he earned his MS and PhD in biochemistry at UW-Madison. He held research positions in various places including Pabst Brewery in Milwaukee and the Enzyme Institute at UW-Madison, and in 1966 took employment with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Experimental Center in Beltsville, Md.

He conducted extensive research in his field and authored many papers, which appeared in various chemical journals. He was an active member of the American Chemical Society, and often presented his papers at Society meetings. He retired at age 65 and moved to Nevada.

Perhaps he is best remembered for his love of family, and the respect with which he honored his immigrant parents for their hard work and caring ways. He was a just and humble person and will be missed.

Survivors include his sisters. Frances Weinstein Madison, Esther (Kenneth) Lange, Baraboo, Ruth (Harold) Stein, Mequon; nieces; nephews; and other relatives.

He was further preceded in death by brothers, Benjamin and Paul; sister, Ethel (Henry) Mayer; and brother-in-law, Laurence Weinstein.

A graveside service was held Jan. 18, at Second Home Cemetery, 3705 S. 43rd St., Milwaukee. Rabbi Ron Shapiro of Congregation Shalom in Fox Point, officiated. Goodman-Bensman Funeral Home, Whitefish Bay, served the family.
