RICHARD CERWIN

Richard Cerwin, 73, Cassville, died peacefully with his loving wife by his side on May 2, 2013, at his residence. With a tear and a smile, family and friends joyfully share that the world has become a little less interesting for the time being.

He was born and raised in Chicago, and moved to the Burlington area in 1975 with wife and children.

Under his direction of the buildings and grounds at Marquette University, the school won many awards.  Until retirement he provided similar services locally.

His main hobby was people. From various morning coffee groups to chats with local business people, he was never at a loss for a good idea or positive inspiration. Friends remember he was quick with a joke, a smile, and a pat on the back. Losing his own father at age 11, his heart held a special place for young men in similar circumstances. His natural charisma made you feel like the most important person in the world – it felt good to know him!

If people were his hobby, Richard’s true love was his family. He and ‘bride’ Alice celebrated 50 loving years together in January. Their lifetime adventures continued with a move to Cassville five years ago. His impact on that community was reflected on all the care and concern shown to Alice when she needed it most.

Son Michael has continued his father’s tradition by becoming a respected local businessman. Donna and David Sturdevant, his daughter and son-in-law, provided him joy in the form of Matthew, Michelle, Bryan, and Aaron who will always cherish memories of adventures with Grandpa. His son Mark only wishes to put into practice Pop’s life lessons and share half the love he was given – that would be more than enough to go around. Richard also loved the many animal companions with whom he shared a home.

Private services were held  May 8 at Resurrection Cemetery in suburban Chicago. Martin Schwartz Funeral Home, Cassville, served the family.

In memoriam, all Richard would ask is that you carry on his practice of doing “one positive thing each day.”
