MARY ALVAREZ

Mary Alvarez, 97, Burlington, died March 24, 2013, at Aurora Burlington Memorial Hospital. She was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Kenosha, to the late Theodore and Elizabeth (Trotsky) Yanel. She spent her early life and received her education in Kenosha.

On Oct. 28, 1933, in Waukegan, Ill., she married Florencio Alvarez Sr. Following marriage they resided in Kenosha before making their home in Burlington. He preceded her in death on June 24, 2003.

She was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Burlington. She enjoyed gardening, being outdoors, playing cards, reading, sewing and spending winters in Mexico with her husband. She was a homemaker, a wonderful wife to Florencio, an exceptional mother of nine and an adoring grandmother of 19. She loved her family and had always put them first. Along with her family, Mary loved people and saw the best in every person she met. She will be truly missed by all those who were blessed to have her in their lives.

Survivors include her children, Caroline Grisham, Mary (Frank) Brown, Tony (Mary) Alvarez, Luis (Pat) Alvarez, Suzie Alvarez, Ramón Alvarez and Ana Maria Cotton; grandchildren, Kathy (Hunt), Frank (Kathy), Cindy (Scott), Brenda (Jon), Lencho (Sue), Kevin (Janelle), Craig, Traci, Tiffany (Rex), Angela, Anthony, Andrea, Natalie, Hope, Paul, Sam (Kiata) and Tony; many great-grandchildren; sister, Antonia Batiste.

She was further preceded in death by her  sons, José Alvarez and Lencho Alvarez; grandchildren, Linda Sue Grisham and Billy Brown; brother, Tony Yanel; sister, Stella Marko; and son-in-law, Jack Grisham.

Visitation is Monday, April 1, from 4-8 p.m., at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home & Crematory, 625 Browns Lake Drive, Burlington. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 2, at 11 a.m., at St. Charles Catholic Church. The Rev. Sergio Lizama will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery.

  1. I am so sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. She was one of my favorite residents when I worked at Mt. Carmel. The help and friendship she and her family showed me will never be forgotten!
