JOSEPH H. HYING

Deacon Joseph H. ‘Joe’ Hying, 83, Waterford, died with his loving family by his side on Aug. 3, 2013.

He was born May 10, 1930, in Richland County, to the late Joseph H. Hying and Magdalena Kruel. He spent his early life in Wisconsin, Missouri and Iowa and studied with the Redemptorist Fathers for 8 years.

On April 8, 1961, in New Haven, Iowa, he married his wife of 52 years, Donna M. Birkholz. They had 10 children.

He was a graduate of Loras College and attended many graduate studies. He taught social studies and Latin at the high school level for nine years in Iowa and for 24 years at Waterford Union High School. His greatest passion came in serving his Catholic faith, family and friends.  He was an Ordained Catholic Deacon at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish for many years, serving family and faith.

Survivors include his wife: children, Gerard, Waterford, Clement, Menomonee Falls, Peter, Waterford, Janet (Stanley) Blanco, Milwaukee, Catherine (John) Czarny, Greendale, Martin, Racine, Daniel (Jennifer), Franksville, Emmett (Liesl), Whitewater, John (Jessica), DeForest; grandchildren, Gerard’s children Scott and Erin Hying, Clem’s children Zachary and Skyler Hying, Catherine’s child Ashley Kempken, Martin’s child Jillian Hying, Daniel’s children Luke, Noah and Grace Hying; his brother and sister, Clete (Joanne), Mary (Bob); sisters-in-law, Bernadette and Phyllis; nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and many friends.

He was further preceded in death by his son, Edward; brothers, Sebastian, Wilburt, Elmer, Louie, Leo and Eugene; sister, Magdaline; sisters-in-law, Sally, Coletta, and Donna; brother-in-law, John.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 6 p.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 305 S. First St., (Hwy. 20), Waterford, with Bishop Donald Hying officiating. Visitation in church Wednesday from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 8. Meet at the cemetery. Mealy Funeral Home, Inc. Waterford, is serving the family.

In lieu of floral expressions of sympathy, his family suggests memorials be made to either the Redemptorist Retreat Center (Oconomowoc), St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, or St. Vincent de Paul.
