JOHN A. VAN SUSTEREN

John A. Van Susteren MD, 93, Burlington, died Oct. 21, 2013, at Pine Brook Pointe Assisted Living Facility.

He was born on Jan. 14, 1920, in Little Chute, to the late Henry B. and Mary (Blindauer) Van Susteren. He spent his early life in Little Chute, graduating from St. John’s Grade School and Kimberly High School, where he was captain of the football team. He then went onto premed at UW–Madison and graduated from Marquette University School of Medicine in 1946. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1950 and was stationed in Japan as the Post Surgeon at the Ito Jima School Command. After returning to the United States he attended the University of Minnesota, receiving his Masters Degree and Board Certification in Preventative Medicine and Public Health. He served with the Wisconsin National Guard from 1960 to 1962 advancing to the rank of Major.

On July 24, 1944, he married Helen Fudzinski at St. Mary’s Help of Christians Catholic Church, West Allis. Following marriage they resided in Milwaukee, Battle Creek, Mich., two years in Japan with the Army of Occupation, Sparta, La Crosse, Madison, Florida and Madison. Helen preceded him in death on Jan. 11, 1999. He had been a resident of Burlington since June 16, 2001.

He was employed by the State of Wisconsin as a Physician in Preventive Medicine and Public Health. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Burlington, the State Medical Society, and A.M.A. He enjoyed singing, music, sports, especially football, tree farming, and loved to travel and go camping.

Survivors include his son, Mark J. Van Susteren, Cottage Grove; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

He was further preceded in death by his brothers, Peter, Raymond, Norbert, Austin, Stanley, Urban, Joseph, Roman and Maurice, and sisters, Olive, Eva, Muriel, Irene and Joan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Burlington, with the Rev. Jim Volkert presiding. Visitation is Oct. 25, at Good Sheppard Chapel in St. Mary’s Church from 3-4 p.m. Inurnment is Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m., at Chapel Hill Cemetery.

Memorials to St. Mary’s Parish in Burlington or the Medical College of Wisconsin are appreciated.
