Bernadine M. ‘Bernie’ Barthel,  83, Wauwatosa, (formerly Waterford) died Dec. 10, 2013, at Elmbrook Hospital in Brookfield. She was born in Milwaukee on Sept. 10, 1930, to the late Stanley and Blanche (Mrozek) Wien.

She attended St. Casimir Catholic Graded School and Messmer High School and graduated from Riverside High in Milwaukee.

On May 19, 1956, she married Clarence A. Barthel at St. Casimir Catholic Church in Milwaukee. He died on May 26, 2005.  The couple had lived in Waterford for 49 years. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. She sang in the choir, helped with children’s choir and was the ‘Lemon Lady’ at the Friday fish fries for many years. She enjoyed her music and singing.

After the passing of her dear husband, she resided at Steepleview Senior Apartments in Muskego, of which she called home. Every year in the weeks before Christmas she looked forward to singing in the Christmas choir at Steepleview. She spent her last several months living at St. Camilla’s Retirement Community in Wauwatosa where she gained many new friends.

Survivors include her daughters, Nancy Barthel, Green Bay and Susan Barthel, Franklin; sisters, Jeannette Bar, Fran Barczewski, Carol Inarski and Connie (Chuck) Klatt; brother-in-Law, Donald (Dorothy) Barthel; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.

She was further preceded in death by her brothers, Tony, John and Joe Wien; and sister, Wanda Reszinski.

Her Family wishes to express their gratitude to the neighbors, friends, staff, and caregivers at Steepleview and St. Camilla’s Retirement Communities. Also a heartfelt thank you  to the ER doctors and nursing staff at Elmbrook Hospital for their care of our dear mother.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Dec. 14, at 11 a.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, 305 S. First St., Waterford. Visitation in church, prior to Mass on Saturday, is 9-10:45 a.m. Burial will be private and held at a later date at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Mealy Funeral Home, Inc. Waterford, is serving the family.

In lieu of floral expressions of sympathy, memorials to any of the following: St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Altrusa House in Green Bay, or Steepleview Senior Living Chapel Fund ‘in memory of Bernie’ would be appreciated.
