KAREN S. FONK


Karen S. Fonk (Rubenstein), 68, Burlington, died Oct. 8, 2012, at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Milwaukee, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born July 31, 1944, in Bellevue, Ill., and raised by Tom and Sarah (Sletten) Frey. She had been a lifetime resident of Burlington and a graduate of Burlington High School. She earned her degree in cosmetology. She worked as a hairdresser for Eugene’s Salon for 30 years before being employed at Hair Works. She was a State Board Director of Cosmetology and had done wig fittings for cancer patients. She had also done the make-up for the Honey Creek Theatre and the St. Charles Drama Club.

On March 18, 1995, in Burlington, she married Erwin “Bill” Fonk.

She was a member of Burlington United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, as well as a Lioness. She was an avid Packer fan and loved NASCAR, Elvis and Neil Diamond. She also loved to cook and bake and can food.

Survivors include her husband; stepdaughter, June (Roger) Morrow; stepsons, Jim and Pete Fonk; step-grandchildren, Caitlin and Austin Fonk, Janine (Jon) Tracy, Brian (Tori) Morrow, Heather (Rob) Latham; six step-great-grandchildren; brother, Don (Joyce) Knudtson; aunts, Rita (Jack) Degen and Jean Rothering; nieces and nephews, Debra (Ron) Manthei, Roberta (Ed) Kellerman, Marlee (Tony) Magdic, John (Shandrea) Degen; and many cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Danny Johann’ nephew, Dan Johann II and Clem and Orpha Vos.

A memorial service is Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m., at Schuette-Daniels Funeral Home, 625 Browns Lake Drive, Burlington. The Rev. Ebenezer Insor will officiate. Relatives and friends may visit with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday, from 3-7 p.m. Burial of cremains will take place at a later date. Memorials have been suggested to a charity of your choice.

The family would like to express a special thank you to the doctors and RNs at St. Luke’s for all their care and compassion.
