Village tax levy won’t be set until October

After looking at this year’s logistics, Village of Waterford officials have agreed to postpone their annual ritual of determining specifically how much money will be levied in property tax dollars to support the municipal budget in 2016.

After receiving input from Village Treasurer Lori Peternell, the board on July 13 agreed to take the issue up in October. Plans had been in motion to determine this summer whether or not the levy should be lowered, stay flat or increased from the 2015 figure.

But Peternell said several issues should be hashed over before adopting a levy amount, including the full impact Gov. Scott Walker’s 2015-17 biennium budget will have on the village. The state’s new budget was formally adopted in mid-July.

In addition to the state budget, Peternell said findings from re-evaluations should come out in early fall. That data, she said, also could be important.

“There are a lot of things still out there that we need to keep in mind as we work on the budget,” Peternell said.

Village to provide funding to Absolutely Waterford organization

In 2016, the Village of Waterford will contribute $15,000 toward the operations of Absolutely Waterford, the local organization that promotes the community’s historic downtown shopping district.

After receiving an appeal from Absolutely Waterford’s leaders, the village agreed to contribute the funds next year. But a secondary request for funding in 2017 was not taken up.

While the board’s vote to pony up the $15,000 was unanimous, Trustee Don Houston said, “I personally would like to see them raise more funds.”

Village to help fund Balloon Fest in 2016

The 2015 edition of Waterford’s Balloon Fest might have just passed, but organizers are already setting their sights on 2016.

The Waterford Area Chamber of Commerce submitted a 2016 funding request application with the village, seeking $5,000 in funding toward next year’s program. The request was granted on a unanimous vote.
