Two new members of the Washington-Caldwell School District Board of Education were sworn into office at the school board’s April 16 meeting. The official start of their terms of office is Monday, April 28.

Yvonne McGilvary ran unopposed in the April 1 election for one of two open seats on the board. She will be joined on the board by write-in candidate John Bieringer.

The school board openings occurred when veteran board members Tim Baker and Dan Theriault decided not to run for re-election.

• McGilvary is married with three children, all of whom attended Washington School.  She has lived in the school district for 20 years.

McGilvary describes her professional background as that of an educator and entrepreneur. She previously served on the school board for eight years.

“I ran again because I have been substitute teaching at the school this year and was encouraged to run by a number of staff members, as well as parents who remembered my previous service,” she explained.

McGilvary said she will bring educational and business insight to the board, as well as a passion for education in Washington-Caldwell and a love of serving others.

“My children no longer attending the school gives me a unique perspective among board members,” she said.

“Washington is a good school in a small community. It is my hope to encourage enrollment to rise and promote the 4-year-old kindergarten program.”

• John Bieringer is married and has lived in the school district for 9 years. He is the owner of C&J Services, a local construction company.

Bieringer said that although an elected position is a new experience for him, he feels that being of service to the community in which he lives is a motivating factor.

“Talk is just that; if you want to make a difference, get involved,” he explained.

Bieringer said his family’s personal experience for the past eight years with Washington Caldwell has been great. “My goal is to ensure that all existing and future students and families can share the same.”
