WUHS monitoring common core standards

Officials in the Waterford Union High School (WUHS) district continue to monitor the state’s Common Core Standards, which were implemented in 2010 and could potentially be refined before the next school year.

Forty-five states are currently participating in Common Core, an endeavor touted as an opportunity to provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn so teachers and parents can plan accordingly when assistance is offered.

“For us to reinvent standards is a pretty big deal,” Superintendent Keith Brandstetter said of possible revisions to Common Core.

Principal Dan Foster said the administrative team will make an announcement before the start of the 2013-14 school year, so teachers can plan to make any necessary changes in curriculum and classroom delivery methods.

“We’d rather be prepared, than not prepared,” Foster said.

2014-15 budget process underway

WUHS officials are in the process of building the district’s 2014-15 budget, Superintendent Keith Brandstetter announced at a School Board meeting Dec. 18.

As part of the process, Brandstetter said each of the department chairs is being asked to put together a prioritized list of capital spending requests. The list, Brandstetter said, is long-range.

“It’s more about the future, and not so much for next year,” Brandstetter said of the planning process.

WUHS nominated a ‘top workplace’

An employee nominated Waterford Union High School to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s annual Top 100 Workplaces compendium, Superintendent Keith Brandstetter said.

In recent years, the Journal Sentinel has compiled a list of top employers, based in part on employee nominations.

“We’ll see what happens,” Brandstetter said of the nomination process.
