Two village trustees leaving their positions

Two incumbents on the Village of Waterford board have given official notice of their intent not to run for re-election as trustees in the April 2013 spring election.

Trustee Roy Gawlitta will leave the board in April for personal reasons.

Trustee Judy Spencer will leave her trustee position but has also pulled nomination papers in hopes of unseating incumbent Tom Roanhouse as Village Board President in April.

• Gawlitta, who has served six terms for a total of 12 years, said he feels it’s time for him to take a break.

Originally, Gawlitta explained, his plan was to serve just one term on the board or, at most, two terms.

“Then it became ‘one more time, just one more time,’” he said with a chuckle.

Gawlitta said he looks forward to finally having enough time to attend to personal business, including a time-consuming project involving property he owns up north.

He said he feels it would be unfair to run for re-election and then not have the time available to do the trustee’s job.

These days, there is a lot more of a time commitment required for trustees than in the past, Gawlitta added.

Ongoing downtown revitalization projects with Absolutely Waterford, as well as the coming state highway reconstruction project, require board members who can commit to both the necessary time and talent, he explained.

“I’m hoping somebody will take out papers to do the job,” Gawlitta said.

• Spencer could not be reached for comment. She was elected to the Village Board in April 2011 as a political newcomer, unseating veteran trustee, Nancy Hoevker.

Spencer has filed her official Notification of Non-Candidacy form as an incumbent trustee for the April 2013 election.

Spencer has also taken out nominating papers to circulate for the Board President position. According to Village Clerk Vikki Zuehlke.  Spencer had not returned that signed paperwork as of press time.

All candidates seeking any position on the Village Board can obtain nominating papers in person at the Village Hall or online under the “Elections/Voting” tab at the village’s web site: www.vi.waterford.wi.gov.  Deadline for submitting completed nomination papers at the Village Hall is 5 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 2.
