  1. I would like to say how disappointed I am in some of the City of Burlington Residents during Trick or Treating this year. It has been a long standing tradition in our family for our girls (now 14 and 17) to get dressed up in some creative costumes and go in town Trick or Treating on Halloween. We said we would let them decide when they were too old or too cool to do this anymore.

Our oldest decided against going this year because she felt she is getting too old. That was her decision, not ours. Not too suprising as she is spreading her wings in preperation for college next year. I was still disappointed because this will be my last Halloween having her home, dressing all silly and coming home with a bag full of candy telling me stories of all the cool costumes and great homeowners she met along the way.

My youngest still went. She put time and thought into her costume and she and two friends battled the pouring rain to continue the yearly ritual of politely asking trick or treat for their token pieces of candy that would be enjoyed for the coming weeks. This year they were met with rude homeowners asking their age or sending them away with not candy, but instead, shame for being ‘too old’ to do this anymore. She came home with her head held low telling me what happened and I was shocked.

Who decides when our kids are too old? Arn’t we always complaining that our kids are growing up too fast? I have always felt that the teenagers come up with the best costumes and deserve the fun and candy just as much as the one year old who can’t hold a candy pail and is escorted by a parent to the door.

I think sometimes our kids feel they are being so rushed to grow up that they are missing out on a childhood. These homeowners crushed my little girls spirit and should be ashamed. What’s next…a age limit on believing in the Easter Bunny and Santa? The shame should be on you..not on the teens who are still children politely out to have fun.
