Rochester puts Coral Reef decision on hold

The Rochester Village Board’s Public Works Committee has decided to hold off for now on taking a vote on the potential acquisition of an easement at the site of the former Coral Reef Restaurant, 705 S. Front St.

In recent months, village officials have discussed the possibility of hooking up lines running from the property to the village’s storm water and sewer system.

Committee members briefly discussed the issue June 4, but opted to hold off on voting. Within a few weeks, Village Engineer John Tierney will look into the possibility of negotiating with property owner Greg Meinerz.

Coral Reef for years was a popular restaurant situated on a five-acre site along the Fox River. The restaurant closed in February 2009 following a fire.

‘No parking’ signs out

Signs prohibiting parking along sections of Wade and State streets in the Village of Rochester are on their way out.

The Village Board’s Public Works Committee voted in June to have the signs removed, citing difficulty in enforcing them and the $60 cost of erecting new signs.

Residents are encouraged to call the police with any concerns they might have about parking violations.

The sign removal is expected to take place in July when the full Village Board votes on an ordinance that addresses the issue.

Amenities spruced up

In anticipation of the Rochester Community Day held June 22, village staff and volunteers worked to put the finishing touches on a number of amenities at Rochester Commons Park, located at Spring and State streets. The Park served as the official venue for a slew of events June 22, including the official dedication of the new Village Hall and Park.

Public Works Manager Christopher Birkett noted that new blacktop has been placed on the park’s basketball courts, and the playground work has been completed, with new play equipment in place.
