WWMD working to refine SEWRPC cost estimate

With a $26 million cost estimate in hand, officials with the Waterford Waterway Management District (WWMD) are determined to find ways to make a dredging proposal for Tichigan Lake, Buena Lake and the Fox River affordable – and sellable – to the 1,020 riparian owners who’ll eventually vote on the project.

The $26 million estimate, contained in a detailed, 55-page staff memorandum prepared May 2012 by the Southeast Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (SEWRPC), can be viewed online at www.sewrpc.org/SEWRPCFiles/Environment/RecentPublications/waterford-waterway-dredging-se.pdf.

Kelly Cornelius, who chairs the WWMD, cautions that the $26 million estimate is not set in stone.

Instead, she noted via email, the May 2012 SEWRPC report mentions that its $26 million cost estimate has not been refined through engineering investigations and design.

Other considerations that may influence the project’s costs are competitive vendor bids, different removal methods, transportation distances and private/local/state/federal grant opportunities, she said.
