Fire began in storage area near practice gymnasium

A small fire at Waterford Union High School was quickly extinguished Monday morning, but classes were canceled for the day.

Initial reports from officials at the scene were that the fire broke out in a storage area near the practice gymnasium.

The smoke was noticed early Monday morning by a deputy on routine patrol, according to a release issued by the Racine County Sheriff’s Department.

The deputy saw lights flashing inside the school and later determined they were the result of a fire alarm. After entering the school the deputy saw smoke and summoned firefighters to the scene shortly before 6 a.m.

There were some unanswered questions Monday morning as to why the alarm didn’t automatically summon firefighters.

The Racine County Fire Investigation Task Force was on the scene as the blaze remains under investigation.

Teachers and staff members were initially asked to report to work as usual, but were later told to stay home.

  1. Nice Work Sheriff’s Department!!!

  2. This incident shows a serious lack of leadership from the Superintendent and administration. It is unconscionable that they have an alarm system, but it is not set up to alarm anyone. How foolish can you possibly be? The WUHS is in, and really has been for some time, desperate need for new leadership!
