Quit, or laid off?

Debbie Nelson – who for nearly 15 years has been the voice-on-the-phone, face-in-the-office and note-taker-at-the-meetings of the Waterford Sanitary District – has left her position as WSD administrator somewhat hurriedly, but not surprisingly.

Her position faces downsizing after WSD, seeking cost savings, voted July 24 to begin outsourcing most in-house bookkeeping/payroll/office functions to KJ Tax and Accounting.

Nelson informed the Sanitary District of her termination by email July 28. A copy of that email was obtained by the Waterford Post through a formal, written open records request per state statutes.

In her email, Nelson wrote: “Commissioners, during my tenure with the District it was my responsibility to be the keeper of the records, most of which are locked in the filing cabinets for safe keeping.  As the Commissioner in charge of Administration, Commissioner McNeiley has sent me (a) request for the keys to all files.

It is my understanding my job has been eliminated.  I will no longer access the District email and will make arrangements to turn over all keys and collect my belongings. Debbie.”

For the complete story, including the Sanitary District commissioners’ response, see the Aug. 9 edition of the Waterford Post.
