A high-collared winter coat may have saved the life of a Town of Waterford man, who awoke about 4 a.m. Dec. 27 to find an old friend standing in his hallway, asking for help.

Charged in the resulting incident with attempted intentional homicide is Raymond E. Moore, 45, of Racine.

According to the criminal complaint filed Jan. 2 in Racine County Circuit Court:

The victim said he and Moore have known each other since they were teenagers, and have kept in touch occasionally over the years.

The victim reported that he and his wife were sleeping Dec. 27 when he was awakened by the sound of someone outside the bedroom, loudly whispering his name.

The victim reported that Moore stood in the hallway. Moore explained that his truck had broken down near Burger King and that he had walked to the victim’s home on Glacier Circle to seek help.

The victim said he got up, grabbed some gas containers from his shed and drove around with Moore trying to find a gas station that was open.

The victim said that when he pulled into a Waterford gas station, Moore told him he had left his wallet in his vehicle, so they drove back to the Burger King lot.

The victim said he realized something was wrong when he asked Moore where his truck was in the lot and Moore leaned over and said: “I’m going to f— kill you.”

The victim said Moore used a box cutter-like knife to try and pull the blade across the front of his throat, but the collar on the victim’s bulky coat came up higher than his neck.

The victim said he exited the vehicle and was struggling with Moore when he suddenly felt pain across the back of his neck.

The victim said they continued to fight, then Moore eventually dropped the box cutter and ran away.

Officers who responded observed a horizontal 4-inch long wound about 1 inch below the victim’s left ear, continuing at an upward angle toward his right ear. The victim’s coat was also sliced in the front.

Moore was later located at a residence in Racine and subsequently interviewed by police. He reportedly admitted to having a knife similar to the one described by the victim, which was found by police in the car in which they drove.

Police report Moore gave officers a number of substantially different stories about his whereabouts and activities.

Moore also reportedly could not provide an answer about why he asked the victim to help him get gas for his truck when his truck had not broken down, nor was it parked by Burger King.

A Dec. 27 media release from the Sheriff’s Office reports the woman with whom Moore shares a residence in Racine was also arrested and jailed for disorderly conduct and obstructing an officer. She has since been released on bond; no charges against her have been filed, according to online records.

Moore is currently being held at the Racine County Jail on a $500,300 cash bond for attempted first-degree intentional homicide by use of a dangerous weapon and misdemeanor obstructing an officer.

If convicted of both charges, he faces a maximum of 65 years, 9 months in prison; $10,000 in fines; or both.

Moore is scheduled for an initial appearance in Racine County Circuit Court Jan. 9.
