Despite slipping out of her sweatshirt to evade capture, a local woman faces multiple charges for allegedly trying to slip off with another customer’s purse in the produce section of the Waterford Pick ’n Save.

Charged in the incident is Jeannette R. Slominski, 36, of Rochester.

According to the criminal complaint filed Dec. 20 in Racine County Circuit Court:

A Racine County Sheriff’s Department deputy responded to the Waterford Pick ’n Save Dec. 10 after a customer complained she saw another woman take off with her purse, which had been left in a grocery cart while the victim was shopping in the produce section.

The victim said that out of the corner of her eye, she noticed her gloves fly up out of her cart. She then turned and noticed a woman, later identified as Slominski, walking away from the grocery cart at a high rate of speed.

The victim said she yelled, then ran after the woman and grabbed her by the sweatshirt.

The woman then reportedly began moving around violently, trying to get away. She eventually slipped out of her sweatshirt, dropped the victim’s purse and ran out of the grocery store.

A witness to the incident said he had followed the woman, later identified as Slominski, outside after he saw what happened, and said Slominski yelled at him when he tried to videotape her as she tried to walk away.

The witness gave police the license plate of the vehicle in which the suspect left, which is listed to Slominski. Her identity was later confirmed through her driver’s license photo.

A Racine County investigator reported that Franklin police had identified Slominski as the suspect in a grocery store purse theft incident that occurred there about 1-1/2 hours before the Waterford incident.

Slominski was due in court for an initial appearance Dec. 27. She is charged with felony attempted robbery with use of force and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

She faces a maximum of 7 years, 9 months in prison and $26,000 in fines, if convicted of both charges.
