Math ribbons and trophies add up at Washington-Caldwell

A trio of Washington-Caldwell students came back winners recently after competing in a math tournament among 48 other students from throughout southeastern Wisconsin.

Sixth-graders Olivia Wegner and Leah Bieringer and seventh-grader Carson Bragg brought home trophies from their fifth- and sixth-place overall wins respectively at the Math 24 tournament held at the Kenosha County Center in Bristol, Feb. 21.

Led by math teachers Michelle Bozio and Laurie Ciano, students participated in three 15-minute rounds of problem solving, using exponents and integers and fractions and decimals.

How well competitors fared determined if they could secure a spot in the final round.

The trio moved on and impressed, according to Bozio.

Wegner took fifth-place and Bragg and Bieringer took sixth-place honors among students from eight different schools, following the final round.

Joining the Washington-Caldwell tourney-title holders was sixth-grader Adam Forkner and seventh-graders KC Grieger and Nate Schmidt.

“We had never placed in a tournament before,” said Bozio. “This year, three of our six students placed and received trophies. I am so proud of how hard they worked. They are truly talented and wonderful students.”

She added that the group showed great dedication by coming in on a scheduled day off from school.
