More than two dozen residents attending the Waterford Graded School District’s annual meeting Monday night favored a proposed 2012-13 budget calling for a 2.03 percent increase to the property tax levy.

Superintendent Chris Joch outlined highlights of the budget during the Oct. 22 annual meeting – the one opportunity each year for residents to vote directly on district business.

After two consecutive years of flat tax levies, the district asked electors to bump up the levy amount, from $10.19 million to $10.39 million, due to a variety of reasons.

Because Waterford Graded falls within different municipalities, the mill rate could vary from one community to the next. But overall, the district is projecting a tax rate of $8.11 per $1,000 of equalized value – up from $7.75 per $1,000 of equalized value during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school years.

The 2012-13 budget totals $17.48 million. Last year’s budget was $16.8 million, but Joch said only $15.8 million was spent.

“This means we had a savings of $1 million,” Joch said. “We underspent in a number of line items. Utility costs came in lower than we’d planned because of savings from snow plowing.”
