Area children participate in International Walk to School Day

International Walk to School Day was celebrated in Waterford Oct. 3, with participants from all three public elementary schools (Evergreen, Trailside, and Woodfield.

The Walk to School day is an international event that helps promote a healthier lifestyle for students as well as being a fun event.  It began in the U.S. in 1997 as a one-day event aimed at building awareness for the need for walkable communities.

During the Oct. 3 Walk-a-Thon fundraiser in Waterford, students were sponsored for walking to their schools. Bus riders who were not able to walk to school were met by a teacher to do a walk around the school grounds.

Proceeds raised went to each public school’s PTO, which supports and enhances the educational experiences of students.

Participants received a reusable water bottle compliments of the Waterford PTO.

This year was the first time the Waterford PTOs held the Walk-a-Thon as the main fundraiser, which was deemed a great success thanks to everyone who participated or donated.

Besides the local public schools, St. Thomas Aquinas Parish School also participated in the Oct. 3 event.
