Makers Space meeting set at Waterford library

Budding businesses, industry start-ups, entrepreneurs and “idea people” are invited to a Makers Space meeting at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 15, at Waterford Public Library, 101 N. River St.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the development of a Makers Space in Waterford to serve the village and surrounding communities.

“Waterford is the perfect community for a Makers Space,” said Dan Bowser, Waterford Chamber of Commerce ambassador.

A Maker’s Space is a place to go to try new ideas, learn from others and build community – sort of an innovative community think tank, he explained.

These spaces for sharing equipment and expertise are more common in Europe and are increasingly appearing in the U.S., he said.

Bowser said many interesting products and innovations have been developed in Makers Spaces.

“The idea exchange and shared resources are exciting opportunities for collaboration and growth,” he said. “Anyone in the local area is invited to participate.”

James Carlson, founder of Bucketworks, a successful Makers Space in Milwaukee, will be the keynote speaker at the meeting. Carlson has been helping create Makers Spaces across the country for innovators and entrepreneurs. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Bowser said that for a location, he thinks it would be nice to be able to place a Makers Space in Waterford’s downtown Heritage district, which would be a boost to the Main Street Program.

But there is no guarantee, he added. “That decision will ultimately be up to the Maker community that develops.”
