Sheriff’s dog helps find suicidal girl, 13

A Racine County Sheriff’s Department dog helped find a suicidal 13-year-old girl early Wednesday when she went missing in Union Grove after reportedly consuming anti-depressant pills in an attempt to take her own life.

Deputies were called to the 1000 block of Main Street just before midnight Tuesday by a friend of the girl who feared she was trying to kill herself.

The deputies were initially unable to find the girl. That’s when the department’s dog, Murphy, was brought in to assist. The dog successfully tracked the girl to a nearby building, according to a press release issued by the sheriff’s office.

The release said the girl had also consumed cough syrup. She was taken by rescue personnel to a local hospital for treatment.

Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said it was “quite likely” the girl wouldn’t have been found without the assistance of Murphy.
