Tree branch kills worker at golf course

An 83-year-old man was killed Thursday morning when the lawn mower he was operating struck a tree limb, which subsequently fell and stuck him while he worked at Ives Grove Golf Course in the Town of Yorkville.

According to the Racine County Sheriff’s Department, the county communications center received a 911 call at 10:05 a.m. that a tree  had fallen on a maintenance worker and the man was trapped underneath.

Deputies and Union Grove Rescue personnel  found the man on a large riding lawn mower, still seated in the seat, with his upper torso pinned in between the large branch and the steering wheel of the lawn mower. The operator was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the large roll bar of the lawn mower struck the branch causing it to fall.

The victim was employed by H & H Fairway Enterprises, Inc., which is contracted by Racine County to operate and maintain the Ives Grove Golf Course.

The victim had not been named as of 2:30 p.m. Thursday  pending further investigation and notification of family.

  1. It’s a shame that this gentleman had to lose his life due to the over protective nature of our society. I’ve often wondered why we need some of the safety measures we see today. I’m all for being safe, but a 6 foot tall roll bar on a lawnmower.

My deepest sympathys go out to his family.
