A Sturtevant man out on bond for allegedly burglarizing a Town of Dover home in January picked up new felony charges June 2.

According to the criminal complaint filed June 3 in Racine County Circuit Court:

Benjamin D. Thompson, 24, was observed on surveillance video concealing a $100 spiral saw at Menards in Sturtevant by placing it next to a child in his shopping cart and then leaving the store without paying for it.

During that incident, Thompson was free on bond in another criminal case, and reportedly was wearing a pistol and also carrying a knife and small razor.

Thompson had been arrested and charged in connection with a Jan. 28 burglary to a residence on Britton Road in Dover. Eight charges are currently lodged against him from the investigation into the Jan. 28 burglary, including burglary, maintaining a drug trafficking place, possession of marijuana, receiving stolen property, obstruction, possession of a short-barreled shotgun, possession of drug paraphernalia and criminal damages to property.

As a specific condition of being released on bond in the Jan. 28 incident, Thompson cannot engage in further criminal activity and cannot possess or control any weapons.

Following the June 2 incident at Menards, Thompson faces two additional felony charges of bail jumping as well as misdemeanor retail theft. All three charges carry sentencing enhancements for use of a dangerous weapon.

He signed a $5,000 cash bond June 3, after making an initial court appearance on the new charges. Thompson was next due in court June 12 for a preliminary hearing, when a judge could consider whether the matter would proceed to trial.

As a result of the Jan. 28 incident, a not-guilty plea was entered Feb. 13 and a pre-trial conference held March 15. A status conference in that case is now scheduled for June 21.
