Right on cue, these ladies win despite all odds

The Against All Odds pool players include (from left) Melody Kowalczyk, Deborah Wilson, Jennifer Myers, team captain Kristen Osborne and Jennifer Jansen.

Even with one injured teammate outfitted with a neck brace, an all-female Sturtevant team beat out 12 other teams to win a local pool team championship played May 18 thru May 20.

With that win, the Against All Odds pool players have now gained entry into the largest team pool tournament in America.

“They played in the tournament against teams full of guys and still won the whole thing,” said William Buhs, owner of J.R.’s Boomers Billiards in Sturtevant, where the team plays.

All members of the team played really well to gain their local win, said Buhs.

“But I think Deborah Wilson played especially good considering she was in a car accident a couple of months ago and was playing with a neck brace and in pain much of the tournament.”

Many times her best friend Melody Kowalczyk went to get an ice pack to put on Wilson’s neck to help with the pain, he added.

Buhs said Wilson expects to have surgery soon to correct her injury.

The first thing she asked her doctor was if she would be able to play with her team in Las Vegas, said Buhs, and the doctor said yes – he thinks so. “Now talk about a team player!” he said.

The American Pool Players Association. National Team Championships will be held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Aug. 19-25 for a chance to win $25,000.

The team received $1,600 in travel assistance to help them get to Las Vegas.
