Man tools over to jail after standoff in Yorkville

Laurence Esser

An argument in the Town of Yorkville over a toolbox resulted in a visit by the county SWAT team, which in turn led to accommodations at the Racine County Jail Saturday for a Racine County man.

As of press time, Laurence Esser, 55, was being held in the jail on a state probation hold and faces misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and resisting/obstructing a police officer.

As of Sept. 2012, online court records list Esser’s address as Conifer Court, Union Grove.

According to a media release from the Racine County Sheriff’s Department:

At 10:22 a.m., Nov. 17, the Racine County Communication Center took a complaint of civil trouble in the 2400 block of 65th Drive in the Town of Yorkville.

The complainant said he had been trying to retrieve his toolbox from Esser but, a short time into their conversation, Esser displayed a gun, which police later found to be a “BB” style gun.

After the gun was displayed, the complainant said he ran from the scene to call 911, and Esser entered his residence.

When Racine County deputies arrived on scene, Esser would not respond to them.  Also responding were members of the county’s Negotiator and SWAT teams.

The SWAT team later entered the residence and took Esser into custody.

Besides the charges in the Nov. 17 incident, Esser has an open criminal traffic case in Racine County Court for misdemeanor operating a commercial motor vehicle without a license.

That misdemeanor charge was filed June 5. Esser was scheduled for a Nov. 12 hearing in court on that matter.

He did not make an appearance in court that day, a bench warrant was subsequently ordered and he forfeited a $200 cash bond that he had deposited with the court.
