Cancer survivor tells her story as Relay approaches

Cheryl Anderson is Union Grove’s 2012 Relay for Life Honorary Survivor.

All members of the community are welcome to join in this year’s Relay for Life event being held at Union Grove High School, starting at 6 p.m. Friday, June 15  and continuing through 8 a.m., Saturday, June 16.

Cheryl Anderson is Union Grove’s 2012 Relay for Life Honorary Survivor.

Here is her story.

Cheryl has survived pancreatic cancer, a journey that started on her 54th birthday, Aug. 9 2010.

“We were planning a vacation trip to the Black Hills  in two weeks,” she recalled.

To make a long story short, the trip was canceled and instead Cheryl was examined and then sent to Dr. Douglas Evans at Froedtert Cancer center, who advised her that her pancreatic cancer was operable.

That was followed by two rounds of chemo therapy and Whipple surgery on Nov. 17, 2010, followed by another two rounds of chemo after she recovered.

“From that time until the present I have had CT scans every three months and no cancer has been found,” she said.

Cheryl says she is very grateful for her many friends who prayed and helped her during her treatment and recovery. One of those friends is very involved with the American Cancer Society.

“In the past, I have attended Relay for Life here in Union Grove and never dreamed I would be attending as a survivor!” she said.

Cheryl said she thanks God for every day and for enjoying her life tremendously. She is especially thankful for her husband of 30 years who has stood by her side through all this.

Thank you so much for putting me in your paper. I live in Racine but know many people in the outlying areas. Actually was raised mostly in Elkhorn and moved east in increments over the years and finally landed in Racine. What an wonderful thing to be asked to be the honored survivor!
