Incumbents advance in School Board primary

Incumbent School Board members Barry Schmaling and Kevin Bird were the top finishers in Tuesday’s primary election and advance to the April 5 Spring Election.

They face a challenge from Ryan Mueller and Aaron Melby, who are seeking terms on the board for the first time.

The four are competing for two open seats on the Burlington Area School District Board of Education.

Schmaling emerged as the top finisher Tuesday with 1,301 votes, followed by Bird (1,267), Mueller (952) and Melby (901).

The two other candidates who failed to advance were Tabitha Herbst (440) and Mario Denoto (379). A seventh candidate – former School Board President Jim Bousman – withdrew from the race prior to the primary.
