It has been two years since the last Burlington High School musical production was shut down in the middle of its run due to the rise of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now the school plans a glorious return to the stage with a production of Disney’s “Newsies.”

Show dates are March 4-6 and March 11-13. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m. in the Burlington High School Auditorium.

Tickets, at $5 each, can be purchased in advance online at showtix4u.com. There are also a limited number of tickets available in the main office at BHS during normal school hours as well.

Director Troy Everson said the show is a good fit for this year’s cast.

“When looking for musicals, one must look at the talent that’s available in your cast and chose wisely from there,” he said. “Disney’s “Newsies” has proven to be the perfect fit for BHS this year. While our cast is a bit smaller than we were used to, they certainly are not lacking in talent. The work ethic from this group of students has proven to be unwavering as well.”

Based on the real-life newsboy strike of 1899, this Disney musical tells the story of Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of a life as an artist away from the big city. After publishing giant Joseph Pulitzer raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Kelly and his fellow newsies take action. With help from reporter Katherine Plumber, all of New York City soon recognizes the power of the little guy.

“One of the things that I find most fascinating about this show is that students are playing the role of characters that are the same age they are right now,” Everson said. “They bring a certain amount of realism to the scenes as one doesn’t have to suspend belief to picture that actual character. Our students bring the life before your very eyes.”
