It’s an ages-old tale, one that’s been told time and time again.

A spurned woman, jealous that her lover won’t continue his attentions, acts out violently.

But never has the story been told quite like it is in the musical “Chicago.” With the music of John Kander and the writing of Frank Ebb, the prohibition-era comedy/music/drama hits the stage of Burlington High School next week.

BHS’s production opens Friday, March 7, at 7 p.m. Shows will also be Saturday, March 8, Friday, March 13, and March 14 at 7 p.m.

Matinees will be Sunday, March 9 and 15 at 4 p.m. Tickets are $5, and are available at the BHS main office or at the door, pending availability.

“We’re making really steady progress,” said assistant director Carrie Fidler. “It happens every show.

“Chicago has, even for a musical, a ton of big dance numbers,” she added. “Those are really coming together now.”

The show starts with Roxie Hart (played by Madison Gruman), who murders the man she’s having an affair with after he says he’s leaving her. Sent to jail, she finds herself at odds with another murderess, Velma Kelly (played by Hannah Anderson), as both try to win the attention of the media to get off scot free.

“They both want to capitalize on their crimes to become more famous,” said Fidler.

Enter in an unscrupulous lawyer in Billy Flynn (played by Dustin Pederson), the prison warden Matron “Mama” Morton (Micah Gebel), newspaper reporter Mary Sunshine (Laura Christoph) and Roxie’s husband, Amos (Matt Burton) – and the situation goes south quickly and comically.

The play is directed by Paul Ivkovich, with Josh Hughes serving as technical director, Penny Yanke as vocal music director, Tammy Albrecht as costume director and Emily Mullens as choreographer.
