But swimmers still advised to avoid ingesting water until quality is listed as good

The water quality at Bohners Lake Public Beach was upgraded to poor Wednesday, one day after public health officials closed the beach due to high levels of bacteria.

The upgraded advisory means bacteria counts are still high enough to cause illness. Those who choose to swim at the beach are advised not to ingest the water and to shower afterwards.

The water quality test results received Wednesday indicate the water is improving.

Officials with the Western Racine County Health Department closed the Bohners Lake Public Beach Tuesday because water tests indicated it is unsafe for swimming.

Water tests will be conducted at the public beach until the water quality is considered good. At that time, the health department will lift advisories.

The water at Leach Beach on Bohners Lake was upgraded from poor to good on Wednesday, meaning the water is safe for swimmers.

The department regularly monitors water quality at three beaches on Bohners Lake and the Fischer Park beaches on Browns Lake from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

In the past, health department officials have blamed the combination of feces left by waterfowl and rain, which washes the bacteria into the lake, as the most likely culprits behind the high levels.
