School closing cancels meeting on 4K

Monday evening’s scheduled discussion of a 4-year-old kindergarten proposal for the Burlington Area School District has been cancelled — another victim of the dangerously cold weather.

The BASD Curriculum Committee meeting had been slated for the Burlington High School library to accommodate an expected larger-than-usual crowd. Per district policy, once classes are cancelled for the day, all school-related activities, including governmental meetings, are also cancelled.

The meeting has been rescheduled for next Monday, Feb. 3. at 7 p.m. It will follow the 6:30 p.m. meeting of the personnel committee, which is interviewing a citizen representative for possible placement on a committee.

In the past month, 4K has become the district’s latest hot-button issue with supporters touting the educational and future financial benefits of a program, and detractors saying evidence isn’t conclusive enough to justify the startup cost associated with the program.
