Lyons Center named School of Recognition

Elementary school honored for improvement of low-income students

Lyons Center Elementary School has been named a Wisconsin Title 1 School of Recognition for high progress, the state Department of Public Instruction announced Thursday morning.

The awards highlight schools that have demonstrated success in educating students from low-income families. To be eligible, schools must receive federal Title I funding to provide services to large numbers or high percentages of economically disadvantaged children and meet other achievement criteria.

Lyons Center, part of the Burlington Area School District, is honored as a “High-Progress” school because it falls within the top 10 percent of elementary schools for growth in reading and math, according to the DPI.

“I want to congratulate these schools as examples of the success we need in all of our schools to close achievement gaps,” said State Superintendent Tony Evers in a release issued by the DPI. “These awards recognize the work by students and their parents along with teachers, school administrators, and school staff members to break the link between poverty and low academic achievement.”

This year’s awards recognize seven High-Achieving schools and 29 High-Progress schools; eight schools earned both High-Achieving and High-Progress honors. One High-Achieving and High-Progress school — Ridgeland-Dallas Elementary School in Barron — also was a Beating the Odds School, earning recognition in all three award categories.

Lyons Center and other honored schools will receive a plaque at an Oct. 13 ceremony at the State Capitol and $500 for use by the school.

  1. Waller School also received recognition from DPI as a “Beating the Odds School”. According to DPI Waller is in the top 25 percent of high-poverty schools in the state and has above-average student achievement in reading and mathematics when compared to schools from similarly sized
districts, schools, grade configurations, and poverty levels. I’m surprised the Standard Press missed this fact since Waller was listed in the link provided from DPI in the above article. This is the second time Waller School has earned this recognition. Congratulations should also go to Waller School along with Lyons Center.

  2. Waller, with excellent educators and leadership, continues to impress me. Congratulations to the excellent staff at both schools.
