Low turnout not unusual in spring elections

Throughout Racine County, just 12 percent of registered voters cast ballots in Tuesday’s election, according to ballot figures compiled by the county clerk’s office.

While low turnouts are not unusual in local elections where there are few contested seats, there were certain races that attracted turnout numbers that were twice the countywide percentage.

Locally, the Burlington Area School District Board of Education race posted a turnout of 19 percent in Racine County. The highest interest was in City of Burlington Wards 5-8 where 797 of 3,068 registered voters (26 percent) cast ballots. That same race garnered 21 percent of registered voters (470 of 2,286) in the Town of Burlington Wards 1-7.

While comparatively robust, those numbers pale in comparison to presidential elections, which often pull in more than 60 percent of registered voters.
