4K proposal moves forward

Committee recommends adoption of program to School Board

The Burlington Area School District Curriculum Committee on Monday passed by a 2-1 margin a recommendation to adopt what has become controversial a 4-year-old kindergarten program.

With Curriculum Committee members Rosanne Hahn and Jim Bousman voting ‘yes,’ and Phil Ketterhagen voting ‘no,’ the recommendation was sent to the full School Board for consideration on Monday, Feb. 10.

A number of members of the board in attendance at last Monday’s committee meeting seemed to support of the project but at least two of them – Ketterhagen and Roger Koldeway – were vocal in questioning the benefits and pointing out potential pitfalls of the program.

Among concerns raised in the citizen comment period was the impact a 4K program would have on private preschools in the Burlington area, and also whether 4 is too young to start stringent education.

However, supporters of the program were quick to point out studies showing the effectiveness of 4K as well as the fact that 93 percent of school districts statewide offer 4K. The fear, they said, is Burlington falling behind the rest of the state and the area.

See Thursday’s print edition of the Burlington Standard Press for a full story on the meeting, including comments from board members and residents.
