The Burlington Area School District finalized its 2013-14 school year open enrollment numbers June 3, accepting all students coming in with the exception of a small number of special education students.

Those special education students were denied because the classes were already full, according to district officials. One special education student, who would be headed to the PAC House and who was already enrolled in the district, was accepted.

In total, the district accepted 38 open enrollments into the district, and also approved 112 open enrollments out of the district.

Of those leaving the district, though, somewhere around 40 students appeared to be headed toward the increasing online school network.

BASD open enrollment coordinator Marty McGinley said those numbers could possibly be recovered as online schooling becomes more of an option within the district.

“That’s a lot we could recover, based off some programming we can do over the next couple of years,” McGinley said.

He also stressed that not all students who asked to open enroll in other districts would end up leaving. The final numbers would not be available until students actually enroll in the fall.

BASD Superintendent Peter Smet also pointed out that there were 30 students requesting open enrollment out for pre-kindergarten – not available in the district – and for kindergarten.

Those kindergarten students, he said, were for the most part opting for schools closer to home, as many live along district boundary lines.
