Hispanic ministry brings together local congregations

Catholics representing several Burlington-area congregations joined with members of the Hispanic community at St. Charles Borromeo Church last Saturday in a procession that served as a show of unity among local Catholics.

The procession, led by the Rev. Sergio Lizama, a priest who ministers to the Hispanic community in the Burlington area, was joined by representatives of all three local Catholic parishes – St. Charles, St. Joseph’s of Lyons, and St. Mary, as well as representatives of the Franciscan Missions, Rochester, and the newly formed Knights of Columbus council at St. Mary parish.

Carrying a banner and statue honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe, participants prayed and sang religious songs as they walked from St. Charles to St. Mary following Chestnut Street and Milwaukee Avenue.

A Mass was then celebrated at St. Mary Church to conclude the event.

According to Michael Raboine, a member of St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus council, the procession as it approached St. Mary Church on Milwaukee Avenue retraced the steps of the St. Mary Diamond Jubilee parade held on Oct. 26, 1920.
