Power outage blamed on transformer failure

Parts of downtown Burlington was left in darkness Tuesday night, as an electrical transformer on Congress Street failed just before 8 p.m.

Power was out briefly and then returned, but then went out a few minutes later. It was not restored until close to 9:30 p.m.

While much of downtown Burlington was unaffected, the outage affected the Milwaukee Avenue streetlights at the Veterans Terrace intersection, and also at Grove Street. Police were manually directing traffic in those intersections.

The outage impacted Beaumont baseball field, postponing completion of a game.

Power was also out on the other side of the river, but mainly in the residential neighborhood adjacent to Cross Lutheran Church.

We Energies responded and repaired the transformer. The full complement of city fire and also the rescue units were dispatched.
