The City of Burlington Plan Commission approved the creation of a new parking lot for the city fire department Tuesday night, but took no action on a plan to close Washington Street to through traffic.

The commission approved amending the Multi-Jurisdictional Comprehensive plan for 165 and 181 West Washington, and also the rezoning of those parcels, to allow for the fire department to expand into the adjacent parcel – which used to be a home – and create a parking lot.

The commission also approved a certified survey map for the parking lot, but balked at approving the site plan – which would have included narrowing Washington Street, closing it to through traffic and putting in an apron on the pavement.

Most of the members of the commission expressed concerns about traffic flow if Washington Street were closed.

After about a 30-minute discussion, the commission voted to table the item. City Administrator Kevin Lahner had already said he would bring it back to next month’s meetings with more options for the street.
