Here’s what you need to know to get ready for the school year

As the calendar turned to August last week many parents were hit with the stark realization that school beings in a month, or less, in some cases.

To help smooth the transition from summer to the classroom, area schools in the coming weeks are hosting registration, open house and welcome back sessions for the rapidly approaching school year.

Here’s a look at those schedules at area schools:

BASD public schools

Classes at Burlington Area School District public schools begin Tuesday, Sept. 3, for kindergarten through ninth grade students, with 10-12th grades starting class on Sept. 4.

• Burlington High School – Registration is Aug. 14 and 15 from 7 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-8 p.m.

• Karcher Middle School – Registration is Aug. 14 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m., and Aug. 15 from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Open house is scheduled for Aug. 28 from 5-6 p.m.

• Dyer Intermediate School – Registration is Aug. 14 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Aug. 15 from 7:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Open house is set for Aug. 29 from 5:30-6:30 p.m.

• Elementary schools (Cooper, Lyons, Waller, Winkler) – Registration at all is Aug. 14 from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Aug. 15 from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Open house at all elementary schools is Aug. 28 at the following times: Cooper and Waller, 5:30-6:30 p.m.; Lyons, 5-6 p.m.; Winlker, PTO barbecue at 5 p.m. followed by open house from 6-7 p.m.

 

Private schools

• St. Mary Grade School – Classes begin Aug. 28 at 8:05 a.m. (10 minutes earlier than last year). Welcome back gathering at Music in the Park is scheduled for Aug. 16 at 7 p.m. in Echo Park. Open house is set for Aug. 22 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

• St. Charles Grade School – Classes begin Aug. 28 at 8:15 a.m. Open house/information night is 4:30-7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 and includes an ice cream social.

• St. John’s Lutheran School – Classes begin Aug. 20 for kindergarten through eighth grades with an early release at 12:50 p.m. Pre-K 3 first day is Aug. 20 and Pre-K 4 first day is Aug. 21.

In all cases, bus transportation does not begin until Sept. 3 and parents will be responsible for transporting bus-eligible students until that time.
