Father accused of hitting daughter with canoe paddle

He now faces child abuse charges for incident

A Burlington father accused of hitting his daughter with a paddle while on a canoe outing has been charged with child abuse in Racine County Circuit Court.

Chad M. Kosloske, 36, is charged with two felony counts of physical abuse of a child – intentionally causing bodily harm for allegedly striking his 15-year-old daughter with a paddle during a discussion over driver’s education, and for allegedly striking his 11-year-old daughter causing a bloody nose during a discussion over household chores.

The paddle incident allegedly occurred Oct. 5 while Kosloske and his daughter were canoeing on Honey Creek in the Town of Burlington. The daughter told a sheriff’s deputy she and her father had a discussion about her enrollment in a driver’s education course and Kosloske became angry and swung the canoe paddle at her like a baseball bat, striking her in the back.

The deputy, who interviewed the daughter two days later at a local hospital observed a 6-inch by 4-inch bruise on the girl’s back in the area of her kidney.

During his investigation, the deputy also allegedly learned about an incident involving a younger daughter that occurred about two weeks earlier while Kosloske was drinking.

According to the complaint, the daughter told the investigator that Kosloske became angry because she wasn’t completing her chores fast enough so he allegedly grabbed her, threw her against a wall and struck her in the face with his hand, causing her nose to bleed.

Kosloske told an investigator that he grabbed his daughter by her arm, led her to her room and pushed her inside. He said the girl’s nose was likely bleeding due to the dry air in the house.

Kosloske appeared in court Tuesday where bond was set at $500 cash and he was ordered not to have contact with the victims.

A preliminary hearing in the matter is set for Oct. 17.
