The City of Burlington Common Council unanimously approved changes to the Sewer User Charge System Dec. 17 night – a needed change to ensure revenue for the wastewater department.

The rates include a 10 percent increase in 2014 and a 3 percent increase in 2015.

Category A sewer service charges – which indicates residential use – will go from $23.40 to $25.80 in 2014 for a customer service charge per quarter, and then to $26.60 in 2015.

The volume charge (per 1,000 gallons) will go from $2.95 to $3.25 in 2014, and then to $3.35 in 2015.

For Category B users – which will now include both Echo Lake Foods and Nestle – the customer service charge will go from $7.80 to $8.60 per quarter in 2014, and then to $8.87 in 2015.

The same volume charge change applies, but those users will also be charged for the removal of phosphorus, suspended solids and biochemical oxygen demand (or BOD).

Customer service charges for Browns Lake and Bohners Lake sanitary district users will increase dramatically, from $7.80 to $28.38 in 2014 and $29.26 in 2015. The volume charge will also jump, from $0.74 to $3.58 and then $3.69.

The idea is to bring those users in line with the city users, with an extra 10 percent addition, officials explained.

  1. If you like high taxes and fees live in Burlington

  2. Thank you again City of Burlington. Just when a guy has a slightly better year, he finds out that the city is going to get 10% more of his money than they did last year! When will the madness end!!?? They preach water conservation, than slap us with higher rates when useage goes down!! So what is the incentive to conserve? I am not so glad to see that the rubber stamp city council approved it! I would of voiced my opinion to my alderperson, but I am sure it would of done no good!
