Joe Fox has owned a property at 30349 Durand Avenue for a few years now.

What he has now gotten a chance to do with that property might offer people in the area a chance to get much-needed cash at someplace other than a payday loan store.

The Town of Burlington Board of Supervisors approved a proposal Oct. 11 for Fox to put a pawn shop at the property on Durand Avenue – located across from Fischer Park.

The store will serve as a location for people to bring items in to pawn, and Fox was very clear that the building would serve more as a loan business than an actual store.

“We’ll be focusing more on the lending aspect,” said Fox. He explained that people can bring in items, along with photo identification, to receive money for a given item along with a receipt.

If they don’t return to claim the item within a set period of time, the item will be sold. Fox indicated that items would be placed on eBay for sale, rather than sold at the Durand Avenue site.

Town of Burlington Police Chief Mike Sevick confirmed he had signed off on the plan, and said pawn shops have a number of safeguards in place as dictated by the state – including the full photo ID and the need to be at least 18 years of age.

Both Sevick and Fox indicated that firearms would not be sold on site and would be send to other dealers.

“It’s pretty restricted by the state,” said Sevick, who added that the town would be regularly checking on the business. “I don’t see any problems.”

Fox added, “We’re really focused on being completely above board.” He also said the loans would offer better rates than the five payday loan stores in Burlington.

  1. All pawn shops should be shut down- what they don’t show you on TV is the kids that are steeling everything from their parents home to support their drug habbit. We have a HERION epidemic in this area and alot of our young people are hooked. How many kids overdosed in Racine, Kenosha and Walworth County this year. And where do you think the got the money to buy the drugs – THE PAWN SHOP !!!! A kid getting a loan on his car from a pawn shop is not for him to buy new tires – its to BUY DRUGS. If he wanted tires , why did’nt he/she go to their parents for the money ?? To all you parents out there – If you are missing items from your house, CALL your police dept. tell them you think you child has pawned things stolen from your house – the police can then go into their computer using your kids name and find out if they have pawned anything- you may be suprised, so sit down !!!! All pawn shops must register everything that is pawned with the police dept. through a website- THIS IS THE LAW !!! BUT the pawn shops know how to get aroung this because if they buy the item out right-by law they should log it in to the system – but most of the time they don,t! They do this all the time when they get Gold and Silver, it is melted down or sold right away, that way they can’t get stuck with stolen property. Pawn shops are not there to help us – they are there to pray on the down and out people of our society !!!!!!! Ask any plice officer what he/she things of a pawn shop !!!!!!! Our KIDS NEED HELP and pawn shops are NOT HELPING THEM !!!!!!
