For City of Burlington Police Chief Peter Nimmer the decision to stay in Burlington came down to a simple point.

“It was the right choice to make,” said Nimmer Tuesday after confirming that both he and Mayor Bob Miller had inked his employment agreement to keep the chief in Burlington.

Nimmer had been named one of four finalists for the Whitefish Bay police chief position last month, which touched off efforts by the city to retain him.

The City Council held a closed session, at which it agreed to change the terms of Nimmer’s contract regarding the city’s residency requirement. While city officials remained confident the changes would keep Nimmer here, nothing was assured until the contract was finalized.

According to Miller, the change in the contract means that Nimmer will no longer be required to establish residency in Burlington or within 20 miles of the city.

However, the contract change will also require that if Nimmer does sell his home in Jackson, he will be required to reside in Racine, Kenosha, Walworth, Waukesha or Milwaukee counties.

  1. So if I understand this correctly, the Chief violated the terms of his original contract, then made overtures about leaving, so the City writes up a new contract eliminating the verbage that the Chief originally violated? Hmmmmmmmm . . . .

    • so i guess that opens the door for any city employee that currently needs to reside in the city to be able to change that also.
      Nice job city Gov.
