Beginning next week City of Burlington residents will be able to take advantage of a special program that provides free household energy-saving products worth up to $100 in value.

“This is really a big deal,” said Burlington Energy Ambassador Kevin Duffy.

Duffy, who leads the one-of-a-kind Way to Save Burlington! program – which is a community energy-saving pilot program funded by We Energies – has partnered with Focus on Energy for the new Express Energy Efficiency Program.

Voluntary participants in the new program will be eligible to receive installation of the following in their homes:

• Up to 12 compact fluorescent light bulbs;

• Water-saving showerheads on all showers in the home;

• Kitchen and bathroom faucet aerators on as many fixtures as needed;

• Pipe wrap insulation on six feet of cold and hot water pipes from the home’s water heater; and

• Assistance in setting the home’s water heater to 120 degrees, about 20 degrees cooler than most factory-set temperatures.

“Everything about this is free,” said Duffy, noting that residents not only stand to save money on the installation of the products, but will also realize energy-savings once they’re put into use.

The program is open to residential utility customers that reside in a 1-3 unit home. At least 50 percent of the home must be heated by natural gas or electricity.

City residents will be able to call or visit a website to set up an appointment and representatives from Focus on Energy will then visit the home to install the energy-saving items.

Beginning Oct. 15, residents may call toll free (855) 533-8103 or visit focusonenergy.com/express to sign up for the program.

Duffy said the program will likely be completed by the end of the year so residents shouldn’t wait to participate.

He said a similar program in Madison garnered 5-10 percent participation.

“I would love to just blow that (percentage) out of the water,” he added, noting that Way to Save’s connections in the community could help drive that number higher.
